This Breitling is from a limited edition of 1000 pieces for the 35th anniversary of the Project Mercury Space Flights of 1962, originally purchased in August 1997, and is the only known example with Scott Carpenter's signature present in 3 places: the leather calfskin strap; the warranty booklet; and the limited edition certificate. There are also 4 USPS Project Mercury $0.04 postage stamps included. The stainless steel case with slide rule bezel is 43 mm in diameter. Black dial with silver subdials, and 24-hour display of hours (A feature specifically requested by Scott Carpenter of Breitling for the watch to accompany his pace flight), minutes, small seconds, and chronograph with 30 minute and 12 hour counters. Manual winding movement. Stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp in addition to the Scott Carpenter signed leather strap on a steel folding clasp. Scott Carpenter piloted the Aurora 7 spacecraft on May 24,1962, on NASA's 4th human spaceflight mission, and the second to orbit the Earth. Carpenter relied on his Breitling Cosmonaute to track mission-critical time during his three orbits around the planet in a 24-hour format, preventing confusion between day and night in space.
